What sewerage boundaries and catchments mean

Regional sewerage service boundaries identify areas associated with appointed sewerage undertakers in England and Wales. The Ofwat mapping is a geographical representation of those areas, not the definitive legal record, and the April 2024 dataset may omit newer inset appointments. Scottish Water sewer catchments, also known as drainage operational areas, identify areas draining to a sewage treatment works or public septic tank. The two datasets describe different types of area and should not be treated as interchangeable. Neither dataset identifies an individual property's sewer connection, private drainage route, pipe condition or defects.
